Women’s Golf Defeats Virginia, 7.5-1.5, In Dual Match

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State won seven of the nine matches contested and defeated Virginia by a 7.5-1.5 score in match play at Bay Point Golf Club. The Seminoles won all three matches in the morning and won four of the six head to head matches in the afternoon to gain the team victory in the spring season opening event for both teams.

Florida State won all three matches in the morning with Puk Lyng Thomsen and Amelia Williamson defeating Virginia’s Beth Lillie and Riley Smyth by a 2-up score. Amanda Doherty and Sandra Salonen – a pair of Seminole seniors beat Haeley Wotknsky and Celeste Valinho by a 4&3 score and Kathleen Sumner and Beatrice Wallin closed out the successful round of golf with a 1-up victory over Virginia Bossi and Julia Ford.

The Seminoles then won four of the six afternoon matches with one ending all square to give the Seminoles the team victory.

In the afternoon’s head-to-head match play, Williamson defeated Lillie 2&1, Wallin downed Valinho 2&1 and Doherty picked up a 4&3 victory against Bossi. Virginia’s only win came when Ford defeated Salonen 7&5. Wotnosky and Thomsen were all-square when the match ended.

Florida State opens team play travel to play in the IJGA Collegiate Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico on Feb. 16-18.
