Women’s Golf Finishes 5th At Cougar Classic; Doherty Tied For 3rd

HANAHAN, S.C. ( – Junior All-American Amanda Doherty finished in a tie for third place in the individual standings, and the No. 15 Florida State Women’s Golf team finished in fifth place in them team standings in the Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Club. The event was shortened to two rounds and 36 holes because of the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Florence as all athletic events at the College of Charleston were cancelled by the university from Tuesday through Sunday.

In earning fifth place in the team standings, the Seminoles finished as the highest ranking of four ACC teams in the event (ahead of Wake Forest, North Carolina, NC State and Boston College) and ahead of the No. 17 ranked Demon Deacons (sixth place) and No. 20 Baylor (eighth place).

No. 12 Florida won the team championship with a three-stroke victory over Vanderbilt. Sierra Brooks of Florida won the individual championship.

“It was really exciting to get the first event of the year under our belts,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We were disappointed that the event was shortened to 36 holes because we were really looking forward to playing the final round. It was nice to shake the completion rust off and we are really looking forward to preparing for the Schooner Fall Classic in a couple of weeks. Overall, this was a very successful event.”

Doherty (Atlanta, Ga.) earned her fifth career top five finish as she carded scores of 71-66 (136) to finish only three strokes behind Brooks in the individual standings. Her second round score of 66 tied her career best while her 136 total for the 36 holes played as only one stroke off of her career best.   Doherty carded 17 holes at par or better with seven birdies to finish with a score of 66 for the third time in her career. Her score of 66 is just one stroke off of the all-time Florida State record of 65.

“I hit the ball well in both rounds,” said Doherty. “I was able to get the putts to start dropping on the second day which was fun. Overall, I think it was a good start for the year and I am excited for the rest of the season.”

In Monday’s second round, Doherty birdied her first two holes, was four under par when she made her turn and totaled three birdies on her back nine. She was never at or above par and was at least five strokes under par during her final nine holes of the round. Doherty has now carded nine scores in the 60’s during her Seminole career.

Freshman Frida Kinhult (Sweden) carded scores of 71-68 in her first two rounds as a Seminole and earned her first career top-10 finish with a two-round total of 139. She totaled 16 rounds at par or better with four birdies and the first eagle of her Florida Stare career in the second round. Kinhult eagled the par 5 hole No. 18 as she completed her first nine holes of the day at 5-under par.

Kinhult record eight birdies, one eagle and 32 holes scored at par or better in the first tournament of collegiate career. She was under par in all 18 of her holes in Monday’s second round.

Freshman Beatrice Wallin (Sweden) finished in a tied for 22nd place in the individual standings with a two-day total of 2-under par 142. She scored four birdies in the second round and was at or below par during the entire round. Wallin birdied her first hole of the day to go under par and was never above even during the round.

Wallin totaled seven birdies and 31 holes scored at par or better in the first tournament of her Seminole career. She was never above par in either of her first two rounds of the Cougar Classic.

Sophomore Kathleen Sumner (Charleston, S.C.) finished in a tied for 73rd with a two-day total of 151. Included in her two-day score was the second eagle of her Florida State career – a score of three on the par 5 hole No. 9.

Florida State continues its four-match fall season at the Schooner Fall Classic (Sept.) 28-30. The event is sponsored by Tricia Covel and her husband Toby Keith. The event benefits the OK Kids Korral, which provides a cost-free, convenient, comfortable home for pediatric cancer patients receiving treatment at Oklahoma area hospitals.
