Women’s Hoops to Play in 2018 Junkanoo Jam

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. ( – For the fifth time in the last nine seasons, the Florida State Women’s Basketball program will spend its Thanksgiving in the Caribbean. FSU has been announced as a participant in the 2018 Junkanoo Jam held Nov. 23-24 in Bimini, Bahamas.

The Seminoles begin the two-game tournament facing Eastern Kentucky on Friday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. at Gateway Christian Academy in Bimini. The winner of the matchup will face the winner of the corresponding West Virginia-Iowa game played on the same day at 5:15 p.m.

The Junkanoo Jam Championship in the Bimini Division takes place on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 6:45 p.m. With Bimini being the closest Bahamian island to the United States at just 50 miles off Florida’s coast, all game times are in Eastern Standard Time.

Since the 2001-02 season, Florida State Women’s Basketball has traveled to an in-season tournament in the Caribbean seven times. The Seminoles will compete in the Junkanoo Jam for the second time after winning the tournament in 2010 when they defeated both Alabama (68-61) and Arizona State (65-55).

Over its last seven trips to the Caribbean, FSU has visited the U.S. Virgin Islands twice (2001 and 2017), Cancun, Mexico twice (2008 and 2014), Puerto Rico twice (2004 and 2013) and the Bahamas in 2010.

The Seminoles are coming off a 26-7 overall record in 2017-18, recording nine wins against 2018 NCAA Tournament teams and averaging the second-most points in program history (81.0 points per game).

Teams and fans will stay at the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini, the official partner of the Junkanoo Jam. Built in 2016, the resort features eight restaurants and bars, three pools, a casino with a sports book, snorkeling, big game fishing, and is located less than a 10-minute walk from the game site at Gateway Christian Academy.
