Women’s Soccer Runs Past Jacksonville, 4-1

Oct. 6, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State soccer team won their third
straight match this afternoon as they defeated Jacksonville University
4-1 at the Ashley Sports Complex in Jacksonville. The Seminoles improve
to 7-5 as the Dolphins drop to 5-5.

“It’s really exciting to give win #7 this early in the season,”
Head Coach Patrick Baker said. “This matches last year’s mark, which is
nice since we still have almost a month left to play. It was great to
beat a team that beat us last season, which we’ve done the last two
matches. It shows how we have progressed as a team.”

Junior Stephanie Dietrich scored first for the Seminoles off a
corner kick from Angela Bonaffino in the 23rd minute. One minute later,
Bonaffino sent a corner kick to Ashley Halter, who headed in her first
goal of the season as well as the game winning goal. Jacksonville found
the back of the net when Yvonna Rowinski headed in a corner kick at the
39:59 mark to bring them within one but FSU freshman Janey Hallberg
answered 21 seconds later with her first career goal off an assist from
Kelly Robinson. Seminole sophomore Maren Vik Edvardsen scored the lone
goal in the second half off a long ball from Halter at the 81:33 mark to
give FSU the 4-1 win.

“We had two really good goals early in the first half, which
gave us a little bit of a comfort zone,” Baker said. “But the key goal
was Janey’s 30-yard reaction shot so quickly after Jacksonville scored.
That goal stole the momentum from JU and never really let them get into
a rhythm. Again it was nice to have four different people score, which
gives us some variety in our scoring. We’ve had three freshman score
their first career goal in the last three games, which proves that they
have stepped it up and really made an impact.”

Florida State, ranked #10 in the southeast region, is on a three
game win streak. The Seminoles return to action on Sunday, October 10 at
the Seminole Soccer Complex as they host Wright State at 1:00pm.
