Feb. 4, 2004
The Florida State University Committee of Thirty presents Women’s SportsFest 2004, February 6-8. Women’s SportsFest is a weekend long series of events that begins at the height of the women’s athletics season. Former women athletes of FSCW and FSU come together to meet the current coaches and student-athletes, visit the facilities and learn what being a Seminole is like today. In addition, participants attend sporting events, seminars and athletic reunions.
The Committee of Thirty was formed in 1998 and is comprised of women and men who volunteer their time and service to promote excellence in women’s athletics by building a tradition of support and philanthropy at Florida State University. The Committee of Thirty believes equitable opportunities must be provided for women to participate in and benefit from athletic experiences that foster such values as winning with good sportsmanship and developing the total woman.
Women’s SportsFest 2004 begins Friday with the Seminole women’s tennis match vs. Rice, a golf tournament and Seminole softball. There will be a welcome reception that evening at the Florida State Varsity Club.
On Saturday, there will be a panel discussion along with a continental breakfast in the morning, followed by the opportunity to attend the women’s basketball practice as well as tours of the athletic facilities throughout the day. The group will gather for a fish fry that evening.
Sunday will begin with a brunch at the University Center with keynote speaker Donna Lopiano of the Women’s Sports Foundation. Lopiano, a nationally-known advocate for women’s sports, has been the executive director of the Women’s Sports Foundation since 1992. A former student-athlete herself, Lopiano participated in 26 national championships in four sports. The presentation of the Herbert F. Morgan Award will also take place at the brunch. One of the highest honors bestowed by the Committee of Thirty, the Herbert F. Morgan Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions or provided extraordinary service to promote, advance or support women’s athletics at FSU.
The weekend will conclude with women’s tennis vs. UCF at 11:00 a.m. and women’s basketball vs. Clemson at 1 p.m.
