TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After losing all three doubles matches, the Florida State women’s tennis team swept the six singles matches to beat the Yellow Jackets, 6-1. The Seminoles move to 11-12 on the season and 2-4 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. The Seminoles’ extend the all-time series advantage to 15-2.
The Yellow Jackets took an early advantage in the match when they swept the doubles matches to enter singles play with the one point advantage. At no. 1 doubles, senior Jessica Balbuena and freshman Lauren Walker fell to Jaime Wong and Mason Miller 8-4. At no. 2 doubles, Sekita Grant and Mysti Morris defeated Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny, 8-5. Rounding out the doubles sweep, Fallon Koon and Catherine Gunn, defeated Anca Dumitrescu and Beth Lawrence, 8-5.
The Seminoles, however, would soon take control of the match as they won the six remaining matches. Gallovits gained the Seminoles’ first point of the afternoon, as she defeated Mysti Morris, 6-3, 6-0, at the no. 2 singles position. Soon after, at the no. 5 singles position, Walker captured her match over Miller in a 6-4, 6-0 decision. On court four, after breezing through the first set, Denny overcame a valiant second set effort by Laura Ozolins to win, 6-0, 7-5. To clinch the victory for the Seminoles, Balbuena defeated Gunn, ranked 52nd nationally in singles, in a 6-4, 6-4 decision. Dumitrescu’s win over 48th ranked Jaime Wong and Meredith Fish’s defeat of Sekita Grant completed the match for the Seminoles.
The Seminoles will finish out their regular season Sunday, April 7th against the Clemson Tigers. That match will begin at 11 a.m.
