CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 13th ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (16-5, 8-2) lost to No. 2 North Carolina (23-1, 11-0) 4-0 on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
The doubles point was tightly contested as the Noles took a 1-0 lead in doubles with a big win on court one. Senior Ana Oparenovic and sophomore Emmanuelle Salas defeated No. 8 Jessie Aney and Alex Graham 6-2. The Seminole duo was tied at two before winning the final four games and the match on court one. UNC tied up the doubles point with a 6-2 win of their own on court two. It all came down to court three as junior Andrea Garcia and sophomore Petra Hule were tied at four. UNC went on to win the final two games and the doubles point.
Florida State came out to win three first sets in singles but that was not enough as North Carolina took courts two, four and six in straight sets. Junior Carla Touly took the first set 6-4 from the seventh-ranked player in the country while Oparenovic took the first set on court two 7-5 against the No. 12 player in the country.
That was not enough as North Carolina first took court four 6-2, 6-3 then court two 6-4, 6-2. The match was clinched with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win by the Tar Heels on court six. All three remaining matches were unfinished. Oparenovic had a 4-3 lead in the second set after winning the first while Touly and Hule were in third sets.
Florida State gets back at it on Sunday at 1:00 pm as they take on NC State in Raleigh.
