Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team, after not having any players require qualifying play, began play in Southeast Regional on Friday.
Florida State finished the day with a 3-0 doubles record and a 9-4 singles record as Emmanuelle Salas, Mira Stegmann and Sasha Hill did not lose a single or a doubles match.
The day got off to a hot start with Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia defeating Angel Charney and Eva Chivu of Georgia State 8-2. FSU would keep the momentum rolling after Petra Hule and Sasha Hill took down P. Cortez Vargas and Taylor Dean of Kennesaw state 8-4. Rounding out doubles play, Emmanuelle Salas and Victoria Allen would close out a perfect morning for the Noles with a dominating performance over Aylen Hubeaut and Haleigh Porter of FAMU 8-0.
Building off the momentum from doubles, Salas defeated Alee Clayton of the University of Georgia 6-1, 6-4, punching her ticket into the round of 32. Following suit, Hill defeated May Kimhi of Florida Atlantic 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. After Garcia was defeated by Marta Gonzalez of UGA 6-2, 6-2, Hule made quick work of Haleigh Porter from FAMU 6-0, 6-2. In a well-played match, Allen would be defeated by Mariana Aalcaide of Florida International 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. Rounding out the first round of singles matches, Stegmann earned a hard fought victory over Selma Cadar from Miami 6-4, 6-1; giving the Noles four births into the round of 32.
After bad weather forced the tournament to go indoors, play continued with Salas becoming the first Nole to advance to the Round of 16 with a win over Domenika Turkobic of UCF 6-2, 7-5. Following a tightly contested match that saw Das fall to Eleni Christofi of UGA 6-4, 6-4 but she bounced back and later defeated Mary Courville (MER) 6-1, 6-0. Stegmann would rebound from a first set loss to defeat Gia Cohen of Georgia Tech 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Hill then defeated Lucia Montano of North Florida 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-5 in a hard fought match. After Hule was defeated by Ksenia Kuznetsova of Central Florida 7-6(5), 7-5 the Noles would finish up the day with three advancements into the round of 16.
Rounding out the night on a high note, Garcia would defeat Valentina Mariotto of North Florida 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 in the super tie break.
Due to the arrival of Tropical Storm Nestor play is expected to begin at 2:00 pm at the FSU Indoor Tennis Facility
