MOBILE, Ala. — The Florida State women’s tennis team travelled to
Mobile, Ala. this weekend for the annual Southern Regionals. Seven of the
eight team members made the trip, junior Christy Travis was injured and
unable to compete. Head Coach Lise Gregory continued to use the fall
tournament schedule to determine doubles partners and provide a young
Seminole squad with some experience.
FSU sophomores Marina Raic and Alida Gallovits each won two singles
matches in the tournament and then joined together to win two doubles
matches as well. Gallovits, who was seeded in the A Draw, advanced to the
round of 16 with a win against Georgia’s Christa Grey in the second round,
5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Gallovits faced the tournament’s sixth seed, Florida’s
Traci Green in the round of 16 and could not come back from losing a
hard-fought first set 7-6(0), 6-1.
Raic, who was the top seed of the B Draw, defeated local player,
FAMU’s Nikki Goldthreate in the round of 16 to advance to the
quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Raic met Mississippi State’s Linda
Maltson, the sixth seed. Maltson won a tight first set 7-5 and then
cruised to a second set win, 6-1. Raic and Gallovits were not finished
however, in doubles the two ran off two straight wins after dropping their
first round match. It was the first time this year the two sophomore
Other notables for FSU this weekend included Jessica Balbuena’s two
wins in the A Back Draw, Natalie Carratala’s three set victory in the B
Back Draw, the advancement of Nanette Duxin to the round of 16 in the B
Main Draw and the quarterfinal appearance of Duxin and Carratala in the
Doubles B Draw.
The Lady Seminoles concluded their fall schedule with this
weekend’s Regionals. The team will play its first match of the spring dual
season on January 28th against Georgia State. The match will be played at
the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University.
