TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s volleyball team concluded a successful spring season on April 14, as the squad competed at the 2001 University of South Florida Spring Volleyball Tournament. The tournament featured the host Bulls, Texas Christian University, Central Florida and Florida International.
FSU opened the tournament with a split against Texas Christian. The Lady Seminoles took the first game, 30-20, before falling in Game Two, 26-30. The South Florida Bulls were next for FSU, as the Garnet and Gold dropped the first game (26-30) but rebounded with a 30-19 win in the second game. With a 2-2 games record, the Lady `Noles split against Central Florida (30-22, 26-30) and rounded the weekend out with a split against Florida International as well. FSU fell to the Golden Panthers in the opening game (24-30) and won the final game of the spring volleyball season, 30-22.
Norisha Campbell, last season’s hitting percentage leader for Florida State, led the squad in the same category for the weekend, hitting .342. Campbell notched a team-high 12 kills in the final match against UCF, while notching 11 kills against USF in earlier action. Dawn Hough followed Campbell, hitting .440 for the weekend, totaling 14 kills for the weekend. Alex Sevillano smacked eight kills against TCU while Kristin Frye had nine kills against UCF and hit .343 for the weekend. Fry, Sevillano and Erica Bunch all showcased solid passing, while Bunch also had two blocks and hit .368 in the opening match. Hough tallied three blocks in three separate matches, while Campbell added three of her own against South Florida. Hough also hit an impressive .667 in the Lady Seminoles’ split with Florida International.
Florida State concluded and extensive spring season that included several tournaments, including the FSU Tournament hosted by Florida State in Tully Gymnasium.
