Wood Advances to the Finals of the Bedford Cup
Knaff and Wood advance to the doubles semifinal.
Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State freshman Chase Wood advanced to the championship singles match and the Seminoles’ doubles team of Wood and sophomore Alex Knaff advanced to the semifinals of doubles play in the Bedford Cup Championships at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State campus. The singles championship will be played Saturday morning starting at 8:30 a.m. followed by the semifinals and finals of doubles.
Wood defeated Malik Bhatnagar of Stetson in a highly contested three-set match to advance to the singles finals. Wood lost the first set 6-3, but dominated the second set, winning 6-1. In the third set, Wood started down 2-0, before tying it up at three apiece. Wood pulled away and took the final set 10-6.
“I thought it was some pretty tough conditions out there,” said Wood. “It was really hot out there. The points were really long and I lost the first set 6-3. I had to battle back in the second to win 6-1. I threw open the changeover in the second and third set, but luckily I was able to regroup and finish strong.”
In his final singles match of the weekend, Seminole senior Terrell Whitehurst won a tough three-set match. He lost the first set 6-3 but quickly rebounded taking a 2-1 lead in set two. Whitehurst won four of the next five points to take the 6-2 second set win. In the tiebreaking third set, Whitehurst jumped out to a 2-1 lead before falling behind 4-2. He tied the match at five and took the lead 6-5. He quickly closed out his opponent to earn the 10-6 win in the third set and the victory.
“At home, it was a strong showing,” said Seminole head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Chase beat two really good players today. He got a win over Daniel Kerznerman who beat us last year and followed it up with a tiebreaker in the third under really hot conditions. I thought as the match wore on he was the more physical player and really used his forehand to his advantage.”
