Wys Earns National Honor

Aug. 23, 2010

Florida State University freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Wys, who earned shutouts in the first two matches of her career against No. 21 Washington State and Gonzaga, has been named to the national team of the week. Wys helped lead the Seminoles to the championship of the season-opening Washington State Invitational with two stellar performances in which she totaled seven total saves.

In addition, the Seminoles moved up to No. 6 in the national rankings as sponsored by TopDrawerSoccer – up from their No. 7 ranking in the preseason.

Wys (Coral Springs, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) recorded seven total saves in the 1-0 win over the host Cougars and the 2-0 championship clinching win over Gonzaga. She totaled a career-high six saves in her first career start against Washington State and added one stop in the Seminoles’ victory over the Bulldogs.

The Seminoles’ back-to-back shutout wins marked the first time in school history they had won their first two games of a season by shutout margins. The two wins also marked the second consecutive and fifth time in the last six seasons that Florida State has won their first two games of a given season.

Florida State plays host to Stetson in its home opener on Sunday, August 29. The Seminoles have won five consecutive home openers and are undefeated, 4-0, in home openers under head coach Mark Krikorian.
