West Palm Beach, Fla. — Florida State sophomore kicker Xavier Beitia has been named to the Lou Groza Award preseason watch list. The 30-player watch list will be trimmed to 20 semifinalists on November 4th and the finalists will be announced on November 18th. It will be awarded during a ceremony on December 10th in West Palm Beach. The award, now its 11th year, is named for NFL Hall of Famer Lou Groza.
Other notable kickers named to the 2002 Lou Groza watch list include Tulane’s Seth Marler (last year’s winner), Cincinnati’s Jonathan Ruffin (2000 Groza winner), Texas’ Dusty Mangum and Washington’s Drew Dunning.
Beitia was named a freshman All-American in 2001 and was a second team All-ACC selection. He connected on 13-of-14 field goal attempts and 43-of-47 extra point attempts in his first year at FSU. Beitia hit all three field goal attempts in the Gator Bowl against Virginia Tech, including a career-long 50-yarder.
