Young Ready for World University Games

July 3, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Rising junior Katrina Young is ready to represent Team USA in the 2013 World University Games held in Kazan, Russia at the Aquatics Palace.  The Games run July 6-17, with the women’s 10-meter platform event to take place on July 8.

Young will contest in prelims on Monday starting at 10:30 MSK (Moscow Standard Time). If her scores permit, the Shoreline, Wash. native will also compete in semifinals and finals on the same day. She will be the lone Team USA diver competing in the women’s 10-meter platform.

“I’m very excited,” Young said. “This is another chance for me to show the world my dives and to compete on the international stage.  My goal is to be happy with all of my dives and feel comfortable with every dive I perform.”

Young qualified for the games after a fifth place showing in the women’s 10-meter platform at the World Championship Trials in May. Diving in her home pool at the Morcom Aquatics Center, Young tallied a score of 899.55 points over 15 dives and held her fifth place throughout the meet.

Also heading to Kazan will be head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey.  For the second time in his career, Jeffrey will be a coach for Team USA at the World University Games.

“Any time you have an athlete that qualifies for a world level event it’s a special thing,” Jeffrey said. “Wherever that would be, I’m excited to go. Russia is an interesting place and I think it’s going to be a great experience for Katrina.”

Joining Young will be 11 other divers from 10 different universities.  Young is the only female to qualify for the Games from the ACC.
