Young Selected for World University Games

May 23, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-  Rising junior Katrina Young will represent Team USA in the 2013 World University Games held in Kazan, Russia at the Aquatics Palace. Announced by USA Diving on Wednesday, the Shoreline, Wash. native will dive her specialty, the 10-meter platform on July 8.

“I’m thrilled to compete in Russia,” Young said. “I’m going to train hard and sharpen some of my skills so I can make an impact for Team USA. My goal for this meet is to dive well enough to move myself up in the world ranks on 10-meter.”

Young qualified for the games after a fifth place showing in the women’s 10-meter platform at the World Championship Trials last week. Diving in her home pool at the Morcom Aquatics Center, Young tallied a score of 899.55 points over 15 dives and held her fifth place throughout the meet.

Young will be the lone Team USA diver competing in the women’s 10-meter platform.

Also heading to Kazan will be head diving coach Patrick Jeffrey.  For the second time in his career, Jeffrey will be a coach for Team USA at the World University Games.

“It’s a great honor to coach Team USA for this event,” Jeffrey said. “It will be a great experience for me as well as Katrina. We can’t wait to get to Russia and compete in July, but for now, we’ve got to get back to work and prepare for these games.”

Joining Young will be 11 other divers from 10 different universities.  Young is the only female to qualify for the games from the ACC.  The World University Games will run from July 5 – 17.
