DADE CITY, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State University junior Brooks Koepka shot an even par 72 and is in a tie for 21st in the individual standings and the Florid State men’s golf team is in 12th place in the team standings after the first round of the USF Invitational at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club. Koepka was one of 21 golfers in the 104 golfer field to finish at par or better in the first round and is only five strokes out of the individual lead with two rounds and 36 holes remaining to be played.
Middle Tennessee, with two of its players tied for first in the individual standings are in first place in the team standings after the first round. The Blue Raiders are followed in the team standings by North Texas – the Mean Green are six strokes behind the team lead. A total of four players – Hunter Green and Brad Simons of Middle Tennessee, Conor Casey of Villanova and Carlos Ortiz of North Texas – are tied for the individual lead with identical scores of five under par 67.
“We left a great deal of shots on the course today,” said Head Coach Trey Jones. “We made too many bogeys on par 5’s and short par 4’s that were a result of poor execution.”
Koepka (Wellington, Fla.) was very consistent during the round with 15 holes at par or better with three birdies. After two bogeys on his first two holes, he quickly righted his ship and was two under par over his final 16 holes. Koepka was even par on both his front and back nine.
Senior Drew Kittleson (Scottsdale, Az.) is in a tie for 35th place in the individual standings with a two over par score of 74. He, too, was very consistent during the round with 15 holes at par or better and two birdies. Kittleson was at even par over his final six holes of the round.
“The only thing this team needs is confidence,” said Jones. “At times, they are trying too hard and are getting in their own way. Success and confidence go hand in hand and we are close but obviously not there.”
The Seminoles will tee off on the second round at 8:05 a.m. and will play with UCF and Jacksonville State.
