TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Women’s Basketball looks to get its New Year off to the right start as it hosts Wake Forest on Sunday at Noon on the ACC Network.
Sunday’s Noon tip vs. the Demon Deacons (12-3, 2-2) is a Hoops for Troops game. Showing your military ID at the ticket office window and using the promo code TROOPS means $3 tickets for the game.
One lucky student will also be able to win an FSU military shirt when they check in on the Spear-It-Rewards App.
Due to back-to-back postponements vs. Syracuse (Jan. 2) and Clemson (Jan. 6), the Seminoles (6-6, 0-2) face the Demon Deacons in consecutive meetings after battling them on the road on Dec. 30 in a 75-69 overtime loss.
As a result of FSU’s most recent postponement vs. Clemson scheduled for Jan. 6, the Seminoles have re-scheduled that home game for Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m.
The Seminoles will have the services of senior guard Morgan Jones for Sunday’s matchup with Wake Forest. FSU played without Jones in the meeting between the two teams on Dec. 30. Jones leads FSU in scoring (15.2), rebounding (6.7), minutes played (26.7), field goals made (60) and steals (13).
Freshman forward Makayla Timpson continues to make an impact in her young career. Despite FSU suffering a 75-69 overtime loss at Wake Forest last game, Timpson recorded 11 points, went 5-of-5 from the free throw line and had six rebounds in 15 minutes. FSU was +9 against the Demon Deacons when she was on the floor.
Florida State is +80 this season when senior forward Valencia Myers is on the floor, second only to Timpson’s +87.
Due to injuries, Florida State has been forced to fluctuate its starting lineup quite a bit. Through 12 games, Florida State has had seven different starting lineup combinations.
Auburn transfer and redshirt junior forward Erin Howard made the most of her first opportunity in FSU’s starting lineup, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds last game at Wake Forest for her first career double-double. Howard earned an immediate waiver last season but sat out due to injury.
The Seminoles have out-scored their opponents off the bench in 11 of their 12 games this season. They have a streak of seven consecutive games scoring 20 or more bench points, including out-scoring Wake Forest, 22-16, last game.
Freshman point guard O’Mariah Gordon has had a strong shooting display this season, shooting 47 percent overall (31-of-66) and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from 3-point range.
In ACC matchups vs. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest, the Seminoles have averaged 6.5 made 3-point field goals, above their season average of 4.8 3-point makes per game.
Following Sunday’s game vs. Wake Forest, the Seminoles head on the road to Atlanta to face No. 16 Georgia Tech on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. on the ACC Network.
