Hamilton Named One Of College Basketball’s Influencers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton, who has been voted as the ACC Coach of the Year three times including this past season, was named as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Men’s College Basketball by the editors of Silver Waves Media for 2020. The Seminoles’ head coach is included on a list that includes seven coaches from the ACC – Tony Bennett (Virginia), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), Mike Brey (Notre Dame), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Chris Mack (Louisville) and Roy Williams (North Carolina). Also included on the list are John Swofford (ACC Commissioner) and Paul Brazeau (ACC Associate Commissioner for Men’s Basketball).

Hamilton guided the Seminoles to a 26-5 overall record, a 16-4 mark in the ACC, the first Regular Season Championship in school history and to a likely top two seed in the NCAA Tournament before it was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Seminoles were tied for the ACC lead in total wins, became just the seventh team in ACC history to win 16 or more regular season ACC games and finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Associated Press – the highest final season national ranking in school history.

“Leonard Hamilton has been as consistent as they come in the Atlantic Coast Conference,” said Jake Stanbrough and Sully Carter of Silver Waves Media. “He is the winningest coach in Florida State history, currently sits as the fifth winningest coach in conference history, and just led the Seminole program to their first-ever ACC Regular Season Championship in school history. In what is considered arguably the best conference in America, Hamilton’s Seminoles are the third winningest program amongst all conference participants since the start of the 2016-17 season.”

Hamilton, who was a finalist for national coach of the year honors this past season, was named the District 2 Coach of the Year by the NABC.

Since 2009, only Hamilton (three times) and Bennett (four times) have been named the ACC Coach of the Year three or more times. Hamilton is just one of nine coaches in ACC history who has won the ACC Coach of the Year honor three or more times.

Hamilton and the Seminoles defeated four nationally ranked teams in 2020 to bring his total number of victories over ranked teams to 54 during his tenure at Florida State.  He has defeated 73 nationally ranked teams during his career.

Under Hamilton in 2020, the Seminoles won the championship of the Emerald Coast Classic and defeated USF to win its game in the Orange Bowl Classic. Florida State was undefeated in the state of Florida and won the state championship with wins over No. 6 Florida, North Florida, USF and Miami or a 5-0 record against teams from the Sunshine State. Florida State was 20-0 in games played in the state of Florida and have won 28 consecutive games played in the state of Florida.
