Hamilton Named Semifinalist For National Coach Of The Year Award

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ( – Leonard Hamilton, who has led the Florida State Basketball Team to a second place finish in the ACC standings, has been named as a semifinalist for the Werner Ladder National Coach of the Year award.  Hamilton is one of ten semifinalists for the National Coach of the Year award and the only coach on the semifinal list from the ACC.

For Florida State, the second place finish in the ACC standings and No. 2 overall seed in 2021 marks the third consecutive year and fourth time in the last five seasons that it has earned a double bye in the ACC Tournament.   In recent years, the Seminoles have been seeded second (in 2017), fourth (in 2019), first (in 2020) and second (2021).

Florida State finished its regular season with a 15-5 overall record and an 11-4 mark in ACC play.  The Seminoles have won 13 (in 2019), 16 (in 2020) and 11 ACC games (in 2021) in the last three seasons and have a 40-13 mark in ACC play since the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

The four finalists will be announced on March 17, and beginning March 19 through 31, fans will have a chance to vote for their favorite coach of the four by visiting to cast their ballot. The fan vote will account for five percent of the overall vote. The Werner Ladder Naismith Trophy for Men’s College Coach of the Year will be announced on April 4.

The four finalists will be chosen by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s national voting academy, comprised of leading journalists from around the country, current and former head coaches, former award winners and conference commissioners, all of whom base their selections on outstanding coaching performances during the 2020-21 college basketball season.

As the No. 2 seed in the 68th Annual ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., the Seminoles begin tournament play on Thursday, March 11, 2021.  The Seminoles’ quarterfinal round opponent will be determined in the first and second rounds of the tournament on March 10.  The Seminoles will face either the No. 15 seed Boston College, the No. 10 seed Duke or the No. 7 seed Louisville in the third quarterfinal game on Thursday.  Boston College faces Duke in the first round Tuesday with the winner of that game advancing to play Louisville in the second round on Wednesday.
