Bernie McCann entered Florida State in 1953 after graduating from Saint Ann High School in West Palm Beach. As a freshman, McCann was fulfilling his physical education credits at FSU in a class taught by men's volleyball coach Bill Odeneal who invited Bernie to try out for the varsity team. McCann immediately became one of the mainstays of the team for his entire four years at Florida State.

In 1955, the volleyball team brought home the national championship winning the Collegiate Division of the United States Volleyball Association's National Tournament. After a third place finish in 1956, the Seminoles took the National Championship crown again in 1957. During his standout career, McCann became the first three-time, first-team All-American in any sport at Florida State.
