Shinholser took a dominant role on the Seminole line as a sophomore in 1962. Although undersized at 208 pounds, he more than held his own and quickly earned a reputation as a ferocious player.
Shinholser was credited with possibly the biggest defensive play of the 1964 season when he caused a Florida fumble inside the FSU five yard line that killed the Gator drive. He went on to be named National Lineman of the Week for his performance against the Gators and was later the Outstanding Lineman of the 1964 Gator Bowl. He ranked third in tackles as a senior and was named Playboy Magazine pre-season All-American and earned second-team All-American honors from the Newspaper Enterprises Association and honorable mention from both the Associated Press and UPI in 1964.
"The Wrecker" as he was called by his teammates was drafted in the ninth round by the Washington Redskins and later by the Oakland Raiders in the AFL.
