TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Forward Michael Joiner scored 17 points as Florida
State beat Mercer 83-47 on Wednesday to improve to 2-0 for the first time in
five years.
Joiner shot 8-of-9 from the field to lead all scorers. Guard Tim Pickett
added 14 and Anthony Richardson collected 12 points and 6 rebounds for Florida
State.
Forward Aleem Muhammad led Mercer (1-1) with 13 points, while guard Donny
McLendon and forwards Scott Emerson and Wesley Duke each added eight points.
Florida State opened 2-0 in the 1997-98 season, the last season it posted a
winning record. The Seminoles went on to win their first four games that year
and finished 18-14.
In eight of the 10 years the Seminoles opened 2-0, they went on to play in
the NCAA Tournament.
Florida State, under first-year coach Leonard Hamilton, host Iowa on Monday
in the Atlantic Coast Conference/Big Ten Challenge. The Seminoles open ACC play
Dec. 22 against visiting North Carolina.
The Bears lost all 14 road games during last year’s 6-23 season, but won
this season’s road opener at Elon.
