Hall of Fame Class: 1981 (Football)

Versatility is the word that best summarizes the FSU athletic career of Bud Whitehead. He lettered in both football and basketball. On the gridiron, Whitehead was a brilliant two-way player leading the 1959 Seminoles in both pass receptions and pass interceptions. His six interceptions led the nation that year and his 31 receptions placed him eighth nationally. Both these marks were FSU records as were his nine receptions, and three interceptions in a single game. He was chosen FSU’s most valuable football player as a senior in 1960. Following graduation the Marianna native starred with the San Diego Chargers, earning a reputation as one of the hardest hitting defensive backs in the NFL. In 1969 and 1970, Whitehead returned to his alma mater as an assistant offensive coach.
