Downing Gray graduated from FSU in 1961 as one of the school’s finest golfers and went on to become one of the finest amateur golfers in United States history. His FSU career was remarkable with perhaps his most notable achievement being an unprecedented streak of seven consecutive tournament wins. After graduation, he was runner-up in the 1962 U.S. Amateur Tournament. In 1963 and again in 1965 and 1967, Gray played on the American Walker Cup team. For six consecutive years, 1963-1968, the former Seminole played in the Masters Tournament. He was low amateur in 1965 and 1967.
