Florida State linebacker Gene McDowell became the most highly honored player in FSU history at that time when he was named to the AP’s third team All-America squad as a senior in 1962. A native of Waycross, GA, McDowell was captain of the team in 1962 and played both offensive guard and linebacker. He was named the team MVP as a senior and was Florida’s College Player of the Year. Following graduation, McDowell coached at FSU in 1968-69, then moved to Kansas State for four years before returning to Tallahassee where he coached FSU linebackers from 1974 to 1984. He was named head coach at Central Florida in 1985.
