Hall of Fame Class: 1995 (Men's Track and Field)

Florida State University offered its first full track and field scholarship ever to Jim Casteel in 1954 and responded by re-writing the record books. As a freshman, Casteel was unbeaten in the 440 and tied a school record with at time of 49.5 seconds. After a brief stint in the military, he picked up where he left off in 1957 and led the Seminoles to a team championship in the Florida Relays. The 1958 squad was one of the best in FSU’s history breaking 20 school records and tying two. Casteel, now a junior, was an outstanding point producer on the team with 90.25 total, setting two records himself including a 47.0 in the 440 and was a member of the relay team that set two other marks. His 440 record stood for 17 years.
