Loris Pourroy: On the Rise for Men’s Tennis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Loris Pourroy has always been playing tennis, and he brought his love for the game to Tallahassee. He has played tennis every day since he was five or six years old and hopes that can continue beyond the collegiate stage.
Pourroy, a junior from Gap, France, is in his second season playing court one for singles and doubles. In 2021, he led the team in singles and doubles wins and was a second-team All-ACC selection.
This standard of excellence was developed from a young age as Pourroy won the 2016 French Doubles National Championship and was a regional champion in 2018. After choosing to attend Florida State University, his attention broadened to playing for his teammates.
“The different part is that we train for the team,” Pourroy said. “We practice every day to get better for ourselves, but also for the team.”
Head coach Dwayne Hultquist saw potential in Pourroy to contribute to his roster and develop personally as a student-athlete.
“Loris was one of the top junior players in the world,” said Hultquist. “We saw him play around in the summer international circuit, and I liked how he was a very good athlete.”
College tennis creates a different atmosphere compared to the professional circuit, which is what attracted Pourroy to attend a university, and more specifically, FSU. The experience of playing home matches and competing against big schools is unlike any opportunity in international tennis.
Florida State stood out to Pourroy because of the coaches and teammates who support each other and work hard to make each other better.
“I spend most of my time with my teammates, so they’re like another family,” added Pourroy.
Having a family atmosphere is particularly important for a team with numerous international athletes who are experiencing new things daily.
“Coming as an international kid, he continues to get better in school,” Hultquist said. “He’s a good student and very ambitious in what he wants to do both as a tennis player and an athlete.”
This ambition drives Pourroy to train daily to improve. Pourroy has beaten five ranked singles opponents this spring and rose 37 spots to No. 45 in the ITA singles rankings this week after his performances against Notre Dame and Louisville. Earlier this season, Pourroy earned two ACC Player of the Week honors. After he graduates from FSU, Pourroy hopes to play professional tennis.
