TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – In a repeat of last season, sophomore guard Ta'Niya Latson has once again been selected to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25, announced on Wednesday night on ESPN2.
The Miami, Fla., native and consensus national freshman of the year last season has once again gotten off to an incredible start this year. Latson is averaging 21.1 points and has four 30-point games this season, including three in her first four ACC games.
Latson recorded a career-high 35 points in FSU's 79-75 win at Florida on Nov. 17. She then followed with three consecutive 30-point performances to start ACC play vs. Georgia Tech (30 points), Wake Forest (30) and No. 3 NC State (30). She became the second Seminole to record three consecutive 30-point games, joining WNBA All-Star Natasha Howard from the 2013-14 season.
She has been at her best against top competition, averaging 24.8 points in 30.3 minutes played against FSU's four ranked opponents so far this season.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2023-24 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year presented by Principal. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award.
Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The
winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Principal following the NCAA Tournament in April.
