TALLAHASSEE –   After turning in his personal-best time in the 100-meter free at the German Olympic Trials in April, Peter Varjasi will represent his country at the Olympic Games in Paris in July as a part of the men's 4x100 free relay team.
Â
Varjasi swam under the Olympic consideration in prelims at 48.45, claiming the top seed. He was just off the mark in finals, touching for silver at 48.57.
Â
"I'm so incredibly proud of Peter," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "What an amazing career he's had and now to go to the absolute greatest sporting event in the world for possibly his last meet. He deserves it and the whole Seminole family could not be happier for him."
Â
Varjasi has represented Germany on the international stage at the World Championships in Japan in 2023 where he swam the 50m free (22.54) and as a member of the 4x100 free relay team. He also competed on relays and individually at the LEN European Championships in 2022 and 2018 and was a national champion in the 50m free in 2021.
Â
During his five-year career at Florida State, Varjasi set three individual program records in the 100 free (41.86), 200 free (1:32.76) and 100 breast (51.07) and is also a part of three relay records. He captured eight ACC medals and 14 All-American honors after competing at all five NCAA Championships. Â
Â
Varjasi is also one of three Seminoles in program history to compete in five different ACC championship heats during his career (50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 200 IM, 100 breast).
Â
Varjasi graduated in Spring of 2024 and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team three times and was a CSCAA Scholar All-America twice.
Â
With Varjasi's qualification to Paris, 26 athletes with ties to FSU swimming and diving have made the Olympics, representing 19 different countries. Varjasi is the first FSU swimmer to represent Germany at the Games.
Â
The Seminoles have been represented at every Games since 1996 and also contributed athletes in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1988.
Â
Varjasi will compete on the opening day of the swimming portion of the Olympics on July 27 at the Paris La Defense Arena. Â
Â
Varjasi was also named to Germany's roster for the 2024 LEN European Championships which will be held in Belgrade from June 17-23.
