Spain Wins Pool, Advances to Olympic Quarterfinals

PARIS – Florida State women's basketball alumni Leonor Rodriguez, Leticia Romero and Maria Conde will play in the quarterfinal of the Olympic Games on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. (ET) against Belgium at the Bercy Arena.
Spain advanced to the knockout rounds for the third-straight Olympics, after going undefeated (3-0) in Group A.
After two one-point victories to open the Olympics over China and Puerto Rico., Spain built a 23-point lead and held on to defeat Serbia on Saturday, 70-62, as Conde led the team in scoring with 15 points. This was the first appearance for Conde, having sat out the previous two games with an injury.
In the opening game against China on July 28, Spain trailed for most of the contest, until Rodriguez tied the game 76-76 by sinking a three-point shot and drawing a foul with six seconds remaining in regulation.
Despite missing the free throw, Spain prevailed 90-89 in overtime as Rodriguez contributed 25 points.
Spain returned to the court on July 31 against Puerto Rico, jumping out to a 15-point lead. However, Puerto Rico scored 19 points in the third quarter to tie, 44-44.
In the fourth, Spain trailed by four points late, but rallied to take back the lead with 1:18 remaining, 61-60. Puerto Rico took the lead back with 10 seconds left after hitting a jumper, forcing Spain to call timeout.
Out of the break, Spain drew a foul with 1.9 second to go. After sinking both free throws, Spain held on to win, 63-62 as Rodriguez contributed 17 points.
Romero has played in two games in reserve, contributing two assists and two rebounds. '
