Latson’s Buzzer Beater Lifts Noles Over No. 13 Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Florida State junior Ta'Niya Latson beat the buzzer with a drive to the basket, lifting the Florida State women's basketball team (16-4, 6-2 ACC) to a victory over No. 13/13 North Carolina (18-4, 6-3 ACC) at Carmichael Arena on Sunday, 86-84.
North Carolina tied the game with 3.2 seconds left. Following a timeout, Latson got the ball in her hands and drove to the basket as time expired, capturing the first ranked win for the Noles this season.
Latson led the Noles in scoring, posting 25 points and dished seven assists.
Sydney Bowles led the team from three, tying her career high with six made, including a huge shot from distance with 7.2 seconds remaining to pull ahead, 84-82. Bowles finished with 18 points.
Makayla Timpson finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while O'Mariah Gordon and Malea Williams each added nine points. Williams also grabbed 11 rebounds, leading the Noles.
The Seminoles set the pace early, starting the game on a 7-0 run. FSU went 3-of-4 from behind the arc, jumping out to a 25-23 lead in the first.
In the second, the Seminoles stayed hot from three, making four, but trailed by one heading into the locker room, 44-43.
In the third, the teams traded leads, but North Carolina took a five-point edge after Timpson went to the bench in foul trouble. The Seminoles answered with an 8-0 stretch to take back the lead, 61-58. The Noles took the 65-62 lead to the fourth.
The game saw 20 lead changes and was a battle down the finish.
Florida State will continue on the road to face Boston College on Thursday.
