FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The No. 19 Florida State men's swimming and diving team opened the NCAA Championships with a seventh-place finish in the 200 medley relay in Federal Way, Washington, on Wednesday night.
The Seminoles began the four-day national meet with a school record and the first top-eight finish in a men's relay event since 2019.The FSU relay team earned First Team All-America accolades with their podium finish.
"It was an amazing first night," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "The 200 medley relay was outstanding. Having an All-American relay in the first event is such a great start. The 800 relay was really good too and just outside of scoring. In 10th place as a team tonight overall is a great start. I am excited to see what else we can do this week."
Having qualified for nationals in all five relays, FSU competed in both events on day one at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center, the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay.
In the 200 medley relay to begin the championships, fifth-year Mason Herbet, junior Tommaso Baravelli, freshman Michel Arkhangelskiy and junior Sam Bork broke their own school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:21.60. The Seminoles placed seventh overall to earn a top-eight podium finish by just 0.63 seconds. While topping their previous FSU record of 1:21.98, they posted the team's first podium finish in a relay event since 2019, when Florida State was fifth in two relays and seventh in another.
The evening's second and final event was the 800 freestyle relay, where FSU was 18th in 6:13.64. Fifth-year Yordan Yanchev, junior Utku Kurtdere, sophomore Gustav Olsson and freshman Logan Robinson touched the wall less than a second away from a top-16 finish.
Competition continues on Thursday, March 27, with FSU being represented in the 200 individual medley, the 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay. Prelims begin each day at 1 p.m. ET. The top 16 finishers in every event advance to finals, earn All-America honors and score team points. Relays are timed finals and will take place during each day's finals sessions.
