TALLAHASSEE – Florida State outdoor track and field student-athletes Shamar Reid and Alexa Schwartz were named ACC Performers of the Week Tuesday following their performances at the Terry Long FSU Relays.
Reid was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Week, while Schwartz became the first women's rookie to receive the honored as Women's Freshman of the Week.
"Great meet for the throwers," said head coach Matt Kane. Both Shamar and Alexa have been chomping away, just waiting for the outdoor season to come and they made a huge impact right off the bat. These are both marks that give you an opportunity to make an NCAA final. So certainly, a great place to kick off the season."
Coming off a fresh ACC indoor title, Ried opened the outdoor season with a win in the men's discus for a new personal best and second-furthest throw in program history at 63.68 meters. The Jamaican native's mark ranks second in the NCAA and first in the ACC this season.
Schwartz was victorious in the women's javelin, leading the field in all six attempts. The Florida native sealed the victory with a final throw of 55.17 meters, marking the third-farthest mark in FSU history and the top throw in the ACC this season.
"Since Alexa joined FSU last August, she's been fully committed to the team and striving to be the best javelin thrower she can be," said assistant coach Luke Bryant. "Her performance at the Terry Long FSU Relays was a testament to her potential, and I'm excited to see what she achieves in the garnet and gold this year and beyond"
"Shamar is a talented thrower who brings a positive attitude, focus and determination to practice each day," added Bryant. "Those qualities showed at the home meet, and I'm super happy to see his hard work pay off."
