Comeback Wins Power Seminoles Past Yellow Jackets

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State women's tennis team (7-16) earned a 4-2 victory over Georgia Tech (10-14) on Wednesday evening in the second round of the ACC Women's Tennis Championships at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina. With the win, the Seminoles advance to Thursday's third round, where they will face No. 21 Cal (11-6) at 6 p.m.
Florida State secured its fifth ACC Tournament win over the Yellow Jackets and picked up its first conference tournament victory since 2024.
Junior Eva Shaw clinched the match on Court 1 in a three-set battle that lasted 2 hours, 21 minutes. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Shaw responded with a dominant 7-1 tiebreak in a tightly contested second set. In the final set, Shaw built a 5-3 lead before No. 60-ranked Alejandra Cruz rallied to even the score at 5-5. Shaw regained control, taking a 6-5 lead and sealing the victory on her second match point with a forehand winner into the corner.
Junior Laura Putz put the Seminoles on the board in singles following the loss of the doubles point, earning a 6-0, 6-4 straight-sets win on Court 4 to tie the match at 1-1.
Senior Cade Cricchio followed with another straight-sets victory on Court 6. After taking the first set 6-2, Cricchio trailed 5-2 in the second before winning five consecutive games to complete a 7-5 comeback and give FSU a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Abby Kelliher added a three-set comeback win on Court 5 for her first ACC victory. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Kelliher rebounded to win 12 of the next 17 games, securing a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win to extend Florida State's lead to 3-1.
Georgia Tech picked up a point on Court 2 before Shaw's clincher secured the 4-2 win for the Seminoles.
