WILMINGTON, N.C. (seminoles.com) –
Senior co-captain Maria Salinas finished in 23rd place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in a tie for 10th place in the team standings as play in the 10th Annual Landfall Tradition on the Jack Nicklaus at the Country Club of Landfall came to a close Sunday. Salinas carded three identical scores of 77 to lead Florida State to its third consecutive top 10 team finish in three events during the fall season. With the end of the Landfall Tradition came the end of their fall season; the Seminoles will now set their sights on the Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge to open their spring season in February.
Purdue, which took the team lead in the second round, claimed the team championship with a 14 stroke win over Auburn. Purdue entered the tournament ranked 49th nationally by GolfStat – a ranking that will certainly change after besting the 15 teams ranked in the top 50 including the No. 3 ranked Tigers. Paula Reto of Purdue won the individual championship with a two over par total score of 218.
“Overall the fall season was a success for our team,” said head coach Amy Bond. “We used three different line-ups and which allowed eight different players to gain experience. We enjoyed some really great rounds as a team and had some great individual efforts. The girls worked really hard and this fall and I am really proud of their efforts. We will start immediately on our winter projects and we begin to gear everything towards our spring schedule.”
Salinas (Lima, Peru) finished as the Seminoles’ leader in the individual standings as she closed the event with a third consecutive score of 77 and a three round total of 231. She carded a tournament high three birdies in the third round after carding a total of three in the first two rounds of the event. It was the 20th top 25 finish for the senior.
Junior Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) carded the best round of the day and the best round of the tournament for the Seminoles with a one over par score of 73. After consecutive scores of 80 in the first and second rounds of the event, she earned her best score by seven strokes. Negron was never more than one stroke over par during the round, totaled four birdies and was at or below par of 13 of her 18 holes. She had four birdies in the third round of the tournament as compared to a total of only one birdie in her first two rounds combined.
Florida State earned three top 10 team finishes this fall with a tie d for third place finish at the Susie Berning Maxwell Classic, a fifth place finish at the Mo Morial Tournament and a tied for 10th place finish at the Landfall Tradition. Three different players led the Seminoles in the individual standings with junior Malin Jansson lead the Seminoles at the Mo Morial, freshman Laure Castelain taking the honors at the Susie Berning Maxwell Classic and Salinas leading the Seminoles in the final event of the season.
