WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- No. 24 Florida State Women’s Basketball hosts Syracuse in its annual Paint it Pink game on Thursday night at 6 p.m. Florida State Athletics and Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare join forces for the eighth time to benefit patients of the TMH Walker Breast Program.
- Prior to Thursday’s game, graduate forward Valencia Myers will be recognized for breaking Florida State’s career games played record with 139. Myers set the mark in FSU’s last game at Virginia Tech on Sunday, eclipsing Brittany Brown’s previous record of 138 (2013-17).
- A win over Syracuse on Thursday would mark FSU’s 10th ACC win of the season. It would mark eight consecutive seasons that the Seminoles have amassed double-digit wins in one of the nation’s most competitive conferences.
- Thursday’s matchup is a meeting of two talented head coaches who both lead their alma maters. Head Coach Brooke Wyckoff was an All-America performer for the Seminoles and earned All-ACC honors in all four seasons. Felisa Legette-Jack was a two-time All-American with the Orange and a three-time All-BIG EAST selection.
- Freshman Ta’Niya Latson has 590 total points this season, sitting fifth on the FSU single-season list. With 10 more points, she will become just the fourth Seminole to reach 600 points in a season. Latson would join Sue Galkantas (710 in 1981-82; 627 in 1980-81), Natasha Howard (675 in 2013-14) and Roneeka Hodges (615 in 2004-05).
- Thursday’s matchup has large implications for both teams. The Seminoles (20-7, 9-5) are tied for fifth place in the ACC and currently would be the No. 5 seed under tie-breaking scenarios with No. 19 UNC (9-5) and Miami (9-5). The Orange (16-10, 7-8) are ninth in the league and face its third consecutive Top 25 team (defeated UNC last Thursday; lost at Notre Dame on Sunday).
- With 166 team blocks, the Seminoles have matched the program record for most blocks in a season with the 2006-07 team. Their next blocked shot will mark a new program record.
- Makayla Timpson and Taiyanna Jackson (Kansas) are the only two players nationally whom rank in the Top 10 in BOTH blocks and field goal percentage.
- Florida State is out-scoring opponents on average 87.4-59.4 this season at home.
- Only two opponents have shot 50 percent or better vs. FSU this season (Louisville, Virginia Tech).
- The ACC’s two 20-point scorers battle on Thursday night as Ta’Niya Latson continues to lead the conference at 21.9 points per game while Dyaisha Fair is second for Syracuse at 20.2.
- Erin Howard’s 20 straight games with a 3-point field goal are the most by a Seminole since Imani Wright delivered a 3-ball in 28 straight games in the 2017-18 season.
- FSU and Syracuse meet for the 11th time on Thursday night, with the series at 5-5 overall. FSU is 3-1 against the Orange in Tallahassee.
- The Seminoles are 18th in the latest NET rankings, owning three Top 25 NET wins, five Top 50 wins and 12 against the Top 100.
- Florida State is on track for a ninth consecutive winning season in ACC play.
- The Seminoles are making 16.8 free throws per game, an average that ranks first in the ACC and fifth in the country.
- Thursday begins a critical season-ending stretch with home games against Syracuse and Georgia Tech and road games next week at Clemson and Wake Forest. FSU is looking to clinch another Top-4 seed and double bye at the ACC Tournament. If FSU can complete that goal, it would mark its seventh Top-4 seed in the last nine seasons.
