TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Scottie Barnes, the Seminoles’ leader in assists and steals, has been named as one of the Top 10 candidates for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award by the Nasimith Basketball Hall of Fame. Barnes is one of three freshmen from around the nation and one of only two players from the ACC selected as one of the top candidates for the award named for former Boston College and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy.
Barnes enters Wednesday’s game against Miami at the Donald L. Tucker Center as Florida State’s’ leader in assists (40 / 4.0 apg) and steals (14 / 1.4 spg) while ranking second in scoring (10.6 ppg) and fourth in rebounding (40 / 4.0 rpg). He ranks fifth in the ACC in assist:turnover ratio (2.1:1) and seventh in the ACC in assists.
The Seminoles, who are ranked No. 16 in the AP poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches poll, are 9-2 overall and 5-1 in ACC play.
Barnes is averaging 11.6 points scored per game in the first five ACC games of his career with double figure scoring coming against four of the five ACC opponents he has played against (Georgia Tech, Clemson, NC State and Louisville). He has shot at least .600 percent from the field in three of his first five career ACC games and is shooting .613 from the field in ACC play heading into Wednesday’s game against Miami.
Barnes was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career on December 14, 2020 for his performances in Florida State’s victories over Indiana and Florida. He scored the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give Florida State a 69-67 win over Indiana in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Tallahassee. Barnes then scored his career-high of 17 points to go along with five assists, two rebounds and one steal in Florida State’s 83-71 win over Florida at the Donald L. Tucker Center (Dec. 12).
Barnes is on the Wooden Award Mid-Season Top-25 Watch List and to the Nasimith Award Watch List. He was a pre-season All-American Third Team selection by CBS Sports, a preseason All-ACC First Team Selection by CBS Sports and by the attending media at ACC Operation Basketball and selected as the preseason ACC Freshman of the Year.
Barnes is the highest rated recruit in Florida State history. He was the No. 5 overall ranked and No. 1 ranked power forward in the 2020 recruiting class. Barnes’ signing with Florida State for the 2020-21 season marked the fifth time in the past six recruiting classes the Seminoles have landed a player ranked in the top 10 in the nation. He was everybody’s All-Star as he was selected to play in the 2020 McDonald’s All-American game, the Jordan Brand Game and the Nike Hoop Summit following his senior season on Montverde Academy.
