Finished the season with a 6-5 record… went 3-0 on court two at the FSU Beach Bash with wins against #8 Cal Poly and UAB with Morgan Chacon and a win against Tampa with Jenna Johnson (Feb. 26-27)… finished the TCU Horned Frog Challenge 1-2 with partner Morgan Chacon with a win over No. 19 Georgia State and a loss to No. 18 South Carolina on court two and a loss to No. 5 TCU on court three (Mar. 4-5).
Went 31-7 during her first full season in the Garnet and Gold… she went 4-4 on court one and 27-3 on court two as all of her matches were played with Torrey Van Winden… was named the CCSA Freshman of the Year and to the CCSA All-Freshman team, a First Team All-CCSA with Van Winden, an AVCA Second Team All-American and a Volleyball Magazine First Team All-American… earned CCSA and AVCA Pair of the Week honors with Van Winden after the duo went 6-0 in one week with wins over Louisiana Monroe, Tulane, Houston Baptist, No. 1 LSU, No. 19 Georgia State, No. 11 FAU and No. 10 TCU all in straight sets… won her first 15 matches of the season and 19 of her fist 20… Torrey earned 20 ranked wins 2021 with 11 of those against teams ranked in the top-10, including wins over No. 1 LSU, No. 10 TCU, No. 3 LSU, No. 1 USC, No. 4 UCLA (twice), No. 7 TCU, No. 6 Stanford and No. 4 LSU… Rutz and Van Winden’s 31 wins together marked the eighth-most in a season by an FSU pair in program history.
Played in 10 matches as a freshman, finishing with an 8-2 record…was 5-1 with Jenna Johnson, 2-0 with Lexi McKeown and 1-1 with Morgan Chacon… went 6-0 during the first week of the season, playing four of her matches with Johnson…the two earned four ranked wins over No. 9 Stetson (21-18, 21-13), No. 16 TCU (21-14, 21-13), No. 7 Cal Poly (19-21, 21-17, 15-9) and No. 16 South Carolina (21-17, 21-17)…earned her last win of the season against UNCW on court five with Johnson in a 21-9, 21-5 dominating win… Rutz and Johnson outscored their opponents by an average of 4.9 points per set in six matches…her two matches with McKeown ended in straight-set wins over ULM (21-7, 21-11) and Houston Baptist (21-18, 21-18)…her one win with Chacon was in dominating fashion as they defeated College of Charleston 21-12, 21-8.
Beach: Best pro tour finish: 29th (twice: 2017 AVP Huntington Beach and 2018 AVP Seattle)… advanced through the second qualifying round of the AVP Hermosa Beach with partner Charlie Ekstrom (2018)… finished 33rd at the AVP Hermosa Beach with Jayelin Lombard (2017)… came in 6th place in the Girls 18U division of the USAV Beach HP World Trials (2017)… Orange County Register Athlete of the Week (9/18/17)…won the Volley America Junior National Championships with partner Shannon Murphy (8/6/16)… came in third place at the GNBV Seaside Heights, New Jersey event with Shannon Murphy (8/4/16)
Indoor: Three times MaxPreps/AVCA Player of the Week…Capistrano Valley Christian Volleyball Player of the Year (2017)
Personal: Daughter of Chris and Kristan Rutz…mom played tennis at Westmont College…majoring in Exercise Physiology…wants to play on the AVP and get her doctorate of Physical Therapy… born September 3, 2000.
