Kevin McGarry is in his first season at Florida State and 43rd at the collegiate level, serving as a defensive analyst after joining the program in February of 2025.
 
McGarry has worked with Florida State defensive coordinator Tony White since 2009, first as a position coach and special teams coordinator at San Diego State and then as senior defensive analyst at Syracuse and Nebraska.
 
Prior to his time at San Diego State, McGarry spent 26 seasons at the University of San Diego, including his final eight as head coach.
 
At Nebraska in 2023 and 2024, the Cornhuskers ranked in the top 20 nationally in total defense and scoring defense both seasons with McGarry on staff. At Syracuse from 2020-22, the Orange improved 93 sports in the national total defense rankings, finishing No. 19 in his final season.
 
McGarry and White first began coaching together as position coaches with the Aztecs in 2009. McGarry coached linebackers, defensive line and special teams during his 11 years with San Diego State. He also was the director of player personnel and on-campus recruiting.
 
McGarry’s career began in 1978 as an assistant coach with the University of San Diego, his alma mater. He was elevated to defensive coordinator in 1981, a position he held for 15 seasons before being named head coach in 1996. He posted a 39-38 record as head coach of the Toreros and was the 2002 Pioneer Football League Coach of the Year. In 2003, USD had the nation’s No. 1 offense in Division I-AA.
 
McGarry is a two-time graduate of San Diego, earning his bachelor’s degree in English/diversified liberal arts and his master’s degree in educational administration. McGarry was a defensive back and wide receiver for the Toreros and was named the team’s defensive player of the year as a senior. He began his career at Saddleback College, playing football and baseball and earning football MVP honors in 1975. He was inducted into the Bobcats’ Hall of Fame in 1986.
 
He and his wife Mary Ann have four sons: Pat, Mike, Timbo and Matt and five grandchildren: Braden, Callum, Liam, Maggie and Kevin.
