Veteran college football head coach Tom Herman was named assistant to the head coach in July 2026. During his eight seasons as a head coach, Herman produced a record of 60-38 across stints at Houston, Texas and Florida Atlantic.
Known for his offensive prowess and elite recruiting ability, Herman went 5-0 in bowl games as a head coach, including a 4-0 mark in bowl games at Texas from 2017-20. With the Longhorns, Herman placed 39 players on the All-Big 12 teams, including 12 first-team selections. He also coached the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, two Defensive Linemen of the Year, one Defensive Freshman of the Year, one Special Teams Player of the Year and two Unanimous All-Americans.
Sam Ehlinger became the third quarterback in Texas history to surpass 4,000 yards of total offense in a season, a feat he accomplished in 2019. The season before, Ehlinger became the first Texas quarterback to pass for 25 touchdowns and rush for 15 touchdowns in a season.
Herman was 22-4 as head coach of Houston in 2015 and 2016, including a Peach Bowl win to complete a 13-1 record in 2015. He became the fourth head coach in NCAA history with 13 wins in his inaugural season and the fifth to win the first 10 games of his career. Following that 13-1 season, Herman was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson and Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Awards. The Cougars ended the season ranked No. 8 in the AP poll, the team’s highest final ranking since 1979.
Prior to his head coaching career, Herman was the 2014 Broyles Award winner as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, helping the Buckeyes win the inaugural College Football Playoff with a third-string quarterback.
Herman’s career began as the wide receivers coach at Texas Lutheran in 1998 before spending two years as a graduate assistant at Texas in 1999 and 2000. He was the wide receivers coach at Sam Houston State from 2001-04 before a decade as offensive coordinator at Texas State (2005-06), Rice (2007-08), Iowa State (2009-11) and Ohio State (2012-14).
Herman graduated from California Lutheran in 1997 with a degree in business administration. He completed his master’s degree in education from Texas in 2000.
Herman and his wife, Michelle, have a daughter, Priya, and two sons, TD and Maverick.
