TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 15th ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 ACC) began their season today by securing two home sweeps over FAU (7-0) and Mercer (7-0) at the Florida State Indoor Tennis Courts.
“It was great to kick the season off today,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We have been itching to do this since what seems like last May. The girls did a great job today of managing their courts. They took control and kept control and played very calm, poised and aggressive tennis. I am very happy with the level and the focus in which they played today. It was a good opportunity to compete against someone besides ourselves and mix things around with our doubles partners to get a better feel of what we want to do moving forward.”
The day began with a dominating win over the Owls of FAU. The Noles swept the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Junior Carla Touly and sophomore Petra Hule cruised to an easy win on court one 6-0. Senior Julia Mikulski and junior Andrea Garcia followed that up with a 6-3 win on court three to secure the first doubles point of the season.
The Garnet and Gold showed no signs of letting up as singles play began. Sophomore Emmanuelle Salas got things started for the Noles, getting her first collegiate dual match win 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Fellow Frenchie Carla Touly gave Florida State a 3-0 lead after earning her first ranked win of the spring and fourth of the season as she defeated No. 88 Natalia Boltinskaya 6-2, 6-1. Junior Nandini Das clinched the first match of the season for FSU with a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win on court five.
The remaining matches were played out and the Noles just kept winning. On court six, senior Ariana Rahmanparast grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 win while Hule earned a 6-3, 6-2 win on court four. Senior Ana Oparenovic earned her first dual match win in the Garnet and Gold winning 7-6(3), 6-1.
The second match of the day did not play out much different than the first. The Seminoles dominated across the board on their way to their second sweep of the season, this time over Mercer. Salas and Oparenovic dominated court one in doubles winning 6-0. They were followed up by Das and Garcia on court three who won 6-1. Touly and Hule rounded out the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win on court two.
Touly got the singles scoring started sweeping her opponent in both sets on court one. Mikulski quickly followed suit winning 6-0, 6-1 on court six. Oparenovic clinched the match on court two winning 6-0, 6-2.
Salas moved the Garnet and Gold’s lead to 5-0 with her 6-0, 6-2 performance on court three. Garcia and Rahmanparast rounded out the competition with wins on courts four and five. Ari took down her opponents 6-2, 6-1 on court four while Andrea won 6-1, 6-3 on court five.
The Seminoles will be back in action next Sunday in a big match against No. 20 UCF back at the Florida State Indoor Tennis Courts.
