Abramowicz Highlights Day Three of ACCs

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State men’s diver Tazman Abramowicz finished the 3-meter final in fifth place on Thursday at the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
As the first diver in the order in prelims, Abramowicz turned in a solid round, scoring 362.65 for fourth place.
The Calgary, Alberta, native, scored four dives with 60 points or higher, contributing his best in the fourth round, which was a 63-point scoring back 2 ½ somersault pike.
Teetering between fourth and fifth place, Abramowicz went into finals changing his final dive to include a higher degree of difficulty.
Abramowicz tallied 56.10 on his inward 3 ½ tuck, finishing his first ACC Championship Final in fifth place with a score of 363.90. In finals all six of his dives received marks between 5.5 and 7.0.
“Today was a big day for Taz,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “He’s really been working hard on a lot of stuff between the ears and it showed today. He’s come a long way since a pretty rough injury and for him to get back to this point, we’re really happy for him.”
In addition to Abramowicz, Jesco Helling also scored 13 place points, tallying 333.90. Darwin Nolasco was just outside of the scorers, placing 28th at 277.60.
“Jesco did a great job today as well,” Proctor added. “He only had one miss and a solid list. He has really trained well this year and is maturing as a good competitor. Darwin has been super steady all year for us. Today he was spot on except for two dives. He will be ready for platform.”
Anna Metzler and Sydney Van Overmeiren competed in the consolation heat of the 400 IM.
Metzler won the heat, touching ninth with a time of 4:10.41, which was just off her season best of 4:10.12. VanOvermeiren swam her season best in prelims (4:15.15) and finished 15th with a time of 4:16.54.
The Seminoles had four swimmers earn second swims in the 100 fly, led by Jenny Halden and Edith Jernstedt in the consolation heat.
Jernstedt led the way touching 12th with a time of 52.54, just ahead of Halden in 13th at 52.62.
Aryanna Fernandes (52.35) Sophie Freeman (53.32) swam in the C final. Freeman swam her personal best, which now ranks 10th in school history.
Phoebe Griffiths (1:47.01) was just off her split in the 800 free relay (1:46.88) in prelims, taking 16th at 1:47.41 in the women’s 200 free.
Utku Kurtdere took the final spot in the bonus heat out of prelims of the 400 IM. At night, Kurtdere dropped two seconds, moving up to take 22nd with a time of 3:50.24, which was a personal best. The swim ranks as the sixth-fastest in FSU history.
Aguilar swam his career best in the swim-off of the 100 fly, touching at 46.43 after he tied for 16 in prelims (46.56). Herbet also added his best in the morning heats at 46.59. In the bonus heat, Aguilar tied for 18th, touching at 46.44, while Herbet placed 20th at 46.52, which was his best.
Aguilar (46.43) and Herbet (46.52) now hold the sixth and seventh fastest times in FSU history in the race.
David Quirie swam his personal best in the 200 free to lead FSU out of prelims in the 12th place at 1:34.57, ahead of Yordan Yanchev in 14th at 1:35.15.
Fresh off his record-setting 500 free, Yanchev swam his best in finals, touching at 1:33.92 for 13th place, just ahead of Quirie in 14th behind another best at 1:34.11.
Yanchev’s swim is now the third-best in FSU history, while Quirie ranks fourth.
Peter Varjasi dug deep a won the bonus heat of the men’s 200 free, touching at 1:34.61 for 17th place.
“We had another really good day today,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “We had a lot of best times and fast swims. The team is doing a great job of supporting each other and having fun.”
With two more days to go, the 18th-ranked men’s team sits in seventh place with a score of 353 points, while the women are also in seventh at 293.
