Cunningham and Coach Phillips Win South Region Awards

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State senior Trey Cunningham was selected U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year this Thursday. He is joined by South Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, Kelly Phillips. These awards are voted on by USTFCCCA member coaches and honor coaches and athletes from each of the nine regions.

“Trey is certainly deserving as the South Region Track Athlete of the Year,” said Head Coach Bob Braman. “He’s been the dominant track athlete in the region this entire year.”

Cunningham, who is now a two-time Indoor South Region Track Athlete of the Year honoree after winning the award in 2020, has dominated the track this season. He has remained undefeated in the 60-meter hurdles and this year became the first man to win four consecutive ACC hurdle titles. He has also maintained his national No.1 rank and still maintains his spot on The Bowerman Indoor Watch List. Cunningham will join 15 of his teammates to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-13 where he will be looking to maintain his undefeated season.

Coach Kelly Phillips wins her South Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year honor after coaching an impressive distance program this season.

“I’m really excited for Coach Phillips. She’s really deserving as being named the South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Her ladies were the class of the ACC’s this season, including her ACC Record Distance Medley. It’s remarkable for her to have four distance events represented at Nationals,” said Braman.

Her Distance Medley Relay team recorded an ACC and school record with a time of 10:57.24. Her athletes also contributed greatly to the women winning the ACC crown. Jodie Judd and Yasmine Abbes took the gold and silver in the woman’s mile whilst Maudie Skyring and Alyson Churchill ran NCAA qualifying times to take the silver and bronze in the women’s 3000 meter run. In total Coach Phillips has four distance athletes heading to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the Indoor National Championships where they will be hoping to make a splash and once again win the Seminoles some big points.
