CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mat Nelson, Parker Messick, Bryce Hubbart and Robby Martin earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors, the league announced Monday. Earlier Monday, Nelson was named the ACC Player of the Year while Messick was named the Pitcher and Freshman of the Year.
Nelson, FSU’s sophomore catcher, and Messick, FSU’s ace, were named to the first team. Hubbart and Martin both earned third team honors, while Messick and Hubbart highlighted the All-Freshman Team.
Nelson leads the country with 22 home runs entering the ACC Tournament. He led FSU with 63 runs batted in and started 48 of 50 games for the Seminoles, throwing out 16 would-be basestealers on the season. Nelson is the first FSU player since Buster Posey in 2008 with over 20 home runs in a season.
Messick went 6-2 with a 3.30 earned run average and was second in the league with 114 strikeouts. The redshirt freshman had 11 consecutive starts in the middle of the season with at least five innings pitched and two or fewer earned runs allowed. He struck out at least 10 batters in five games, including a stretch of three straight against Miami, Wake Forest and North Carolina.
Martin hit .255 with 10 home runs and started all 49 games he played. The sophomore was second on the team with 47 RBI and third in home runs, doubles (7), hits (50) and runs (39). As a freshman, Martin was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Hubbart made 12 starts for the Seminoles after working out of the bullpen the first two weekends of the season. Hubbart finished 6-4 with a 3.43 ERA and 92 strikeouts over 65.2 innings pitched. Opponents hit just .205 against the redshirt freshman this year.
