⚾: Noles Fall in Finale vs. Cal

Tallahassee, Fla. – No. 10 Florida State (7-4) fell to California (6-5) in the final game of the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dick Howser Stadium. After clinching the series Saturday, the Seminoles’ 5-3 loss was its third of the season in extra innings.

Sophomore Ross Dunn earned his third start of the season on the mound and threw a career-high 6.0 innings. He struck out 11 of the 22 batters faced, also a career high, and allowed just one hit with three walks.

Cal starter Joseph King surrendered two hits over 5.0 innings, and the game was scoreless until Cal scored in the seventh inning. After tacking on two runs in the eighth inning, Florida State got on the board with a two-run single from Brett Roberts. Roberts advanced to third on a throwing error, and tied the game on consecutive wild pitches from Chris Stamos.

In extras, Conner Whittaker (0-1) allowed a double and single to start the 10th inning before the Bears tacked on an insurance run on a wild pitch from Andrew Armstrong. Nick Proctor (1-0) threw the final 2.1 innings for Cal and did not allow a baserunner.

Logan Lacey had two of FSU’s six hits and scored on Roberts single in the eighth inning. Jackson Greene earned the start at second base, walked in the eighth and also scored a run.

UP NEXT:

Florida State will face off against the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at home on Tuesday, March 8 at 6:00 p.m. The team’s last matchup was in a two-game series on May 12, 2021, where the Seminoles prevailed 2-1 in game two. RHP Carson Montgomery will make his third start of the year for the Noles.

OF NOTE:

  • Ross Dunn set career-highs with 6.0 innings pitched and 11 strikeouts.
  • James Tibbs and Alex Toral extended their on-base streaks to eleven games this season. Jaime Ferrer finished 0-for-4 and his 10-game hitting streak to begin his career ended.
  • RHP Davis Hare made his first appearance of the season in the seventh inning.
