Bristol, CT – Almost 11 million votes were cast in the final round of ESPN.com’s “College Football Helmet Clash” between Alabama and Florida State but the championship round wasn’t even close. Florida State’s gold helmet with the famous spear on the side garnered over 8.5 million votes to beat the Crimson Tide 78.2% to 21.8% in capturing the title of the best helmet in all of college football.

Florida State’s helmet held off the helmets of 15 other schools including Texas, Michigan, USC and others to take the title. FSU defeated USF, Texas and then Alabama on its way to the title. The team and head coach Bobby Bowden were presented with the trophy live on ESPN during the network’s “College Football Live” show.

The current version of the Seminole football helmet debuted in 1976, Bowden’s first year as the head coach. It was conceptualized by an assistant manager and has become legendary along with the man who spearheaded the change.
