M. Basketball Defeats USC Upstate, 80-63, To Gain Second Consecutive Home Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Matthew Cleveland earned his fourth career double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds on seven made field goals to lead the Seminoles to an 80-63 victory over the USC Upstate Spartans at the Donald L. Tucker Center. Cleveland led five Seminoles in double figure scoring, Darin Green Jr. (15 points), Caleb Mills (13 points), Naheem McLeod (12 points), and Cam Corhen (10 points) to earn their second consecutive home win of the season.
Cleveland gained his second double double of the season and fourth of his career against USC Upstate. It marked his fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures.
Florida State’s leading scorer, Caleb Mills, shot four for 11 from the field and four for four from the free throw line to score 13 points. He has scored in double figures in nine of Florida State’s first 12 games.
Florida State led the Spartans 38-31 into the intermission. At the half, the Seminoles had outscored their opponent in every category. Florida State had a .522 (12-23) shooting percentage from the field compared to the Spartan’s .297 shooting percentage (.297). The Seminoles continued their free throw excellency and shot 18 for 23 (.783) from the free throw line in the victory.
Mills and Green Jr. had a perfect night from the free throw line. In his last six games, Mills is shooting .850 (17-20) shooting percentage from the line. Green Jr. added two for two free throws for the night which marks nine of 11 (.818) free throws made in his last four games.
Green Jr. has made multiple three point shots in eight of 12 games this season, shooting three for seven from the three point line against the Spartans.
Florida State had a strong second half performance, outscoring the Spartans 42-32 to gain their biggest lead of the game with less than a minute remaining in the game (+19). With four of the Seminoles’ last five made field goals, Florida State held a 19 point lead and limited the Spartans to zero field goals in the last five minutes of the game.
Florida State travels to the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla to play St. John’s of the Big East in the Orange Bowl Classic on Saturday, December 17th with tip off at 2:30pm. The Seminoles will return home to the Donald L. Tucker Center and play host to Notre Dame in their third AC games of the season on December 21.
