TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Third-year sophomore Mat Nelson, the national leader in home runs and runs batted in, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week Monday. The Seminole catcher hit three home runs, a pair of doubles, had three walks and five runs batted in in FSU’s series win at Georgia Tech.
Nelson, from Largo, Florida, hit a home run in each game of the series against the Yellow Jackets and has a home run in seven of his past eight ACC games. Nelson leads the country with 18 home runs and 53 runs batted in. His 18 home runs are the most for a Seminole in the BBCOR bat era (since 2011) and he needed just 33 games played to reach 18 home runs, the second-quickest in FSU history.
Nelson ranks second in the country with an .868 slugging percentage.
Nelson helped FSU win its third ACC road series of the year last weekend at Georgia Tech. In Friday’s 9-0 win, Nelson homered in the first inning to give the Noles a 1-0 lead. Saturday, Nelson walked in his first two plate appearances before a two-run home run pushed FSU’s lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning.
Sunday, Nelson again homered in the first inning for a 2-0 lead and doubled high off the left field wall in his second at-bat.
For the year, Nelson leads FSU with 18 home runs, 10 doubles and .339 batting average. He is tied with Tyler Martin with 38 runs scored. Behind the plate, Nelson has thrown out 11 of 24 attempted basestealers, including the only Georgia Tech runner that tried to run on him.
This is the first Player of the Week honor in Nelson’s career and the third for a Seminole this year (Robby Martin, Parker Messick).
Nelson and the Seminoles are back in action Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. against Stetson in Dick Howser Stadium.
