Messick, the reigning ACC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, allowed only two baserunners, a single and an HBP, with zero walks against the Bulldogs. He struck out the side in just 11 pitches in his final inning.
Friday was the lefty’s seventh career game with double-digit strikeouts and second of the season following an 11-strikeout showing against James Madison on Opening Day. It was the first combined one-hitter for the Seminoles since February 29, 2020 against FAU.
The Plant City native was named the 2022 Preseason Pitcher of the Year and a first team Preseason All-American by Perfect Game. Messick is rated the No. 3 starting pitcher by D1Baseball and is one of 55 players on the Golden Spikes Award Watch List. He is one of only two players to win ACC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year in the same season.
Messick is the second Seminole in as many weeks to win ACC Pitcher of the Week this season after Bryce Hubbart claimed the honor following Opening Weekend. Messick leads the country with 24 strikeouts on the season, while Hubbart is fourth with 22.

March was a solid month for Montgomery during his freshman season in 2021 as he struck out a combined 18 batters across 8.2 innings. Tuesday against the Bears will be his 10th career start for the Noles.
FSU enters the Mercer game with a 5-2 record after winning the weekend series against Samford. Along with Messick being named ACC Pitcher of the Week, Bryce Hubbart did not allow a run in 6.0 innings Saturday to also improve to 2-0 on the year. FSU produced three triples in the series, matching the Noles total from the entire 2021 season.
Florida State has not lost to Mercer since 1992, and the most recent meeting with the Bears resulted in an 8-1 win for FSU in Tallahassee on March 31, 2021. Florida State leads the all-time series 65-8.
