⚾: Messick Named Preseason National Pitcher of the Year

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt sophomore pitcher Parker Messick, the reigning ACC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, has been named the Perfect Game Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Messick, a left-hander from Plant City, Florida, finished 8-2 in 2021 with 126 strikeouts in 90.0 innings pitched to become just the second player to win ACC Pitcher and Freshman of the Year in the same season. Messick earned third-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA, Perfect Game and D1Baseball and was a first-team Freshman All-American last year.

Messick finished in the Top 25 in strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings last season and did not lose a game over his final 14 starts. He had a stretch of 11 straight games with at least 5.0 innings pitched and two or fewer earned runs allowed.

Messick struck out at least 10 batters five times, with a career-high 12 against North Carolina on April 2. In his final appearance of the season, making his NCAA Tournament debut, Messick did not allow an earned run over 6.0 innings in the Seminoles’ 5-2 win over Southern Miss.

Messick leads a Florida State rotation that should be one of the nation’s best in 2022. Fellow redshirt sophomore left-hander Bryce Hubbart is a third-team Preseason All-American from Perfect Game. Hubbart finished 2021 with a 6-5 record and was a third-team All-ACC selection and Freshman All-American last year.

Over the summer, Hubbart was named a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star and enters his third season at Florida State as the No. 28 draft-eligible player in the 2022 draft class from D1Baseball. Hubbart struck out 94 batters in 71.0 innings pitched and opponents hit just .208 against him last season. He struck out a career-high 12 batters against Troy on May 1.

Messick, Hubbart and the Seminoles open the 2022 season Friday, February 18 against James Madison at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee.
